St. Augustine sits on the Atlantic coast in northeastern Florida and serves as the county seat of St. Johns County. It’s part of the Jacksonville metro area and had a population of 14,329 in the 2020 census. The town has a dense suburban feel, with many homeowners and a mix of retirees and young professionals. Public schools here are well-rated, and the east side of the city tends to be more desirable. 

The downtown district features cobblestone streets, historic homes, and tourist attractions like Castillo de San Marcos (built in 1695) and St. George Street. The area is also lined with cafes, museums, and live music venues. Beaches like Vilano and St. Augustine Beach are just minutes away.

Spring and fall offer the best weather, with low humidity and fewer tourists. March through May is ideal for exploring outdoor attractions like the fort, lighthouse, and historic district.

St. Augustine History

Founded by Pedro Menéndez de Avilés in 1565, St. Augustine was built on land first spotted on the feast day of St. Augustine of Hippo. It began as a Spanish outpost and mission, located near Native American villages for strategic and religious purposes.

During its long history, the town has seen invasions by pirates, control by the British, and occupation during the Civil War. It played a role in the civil rights movement and was visited by Martin Luther King Jr. in 1964. Historic preservation efforts began in the 1960s and continue today to maintain the unique colonial era buildings, sites, and architecture.
