About St. Johns

St. Johns is an unincorporated community in St. Johns County, nestled along the western edge of the St. Johns River. It’s part of the Jacksonville metro area and offers easy access to the city while maintaining its own suburban identity.

The area has seen rapid development in recent years, driven by excellent schools, new housing, and its proximity to both downtown Jacksonville and historic St. Augustine. Despite the growth, many neighborhoods retain a peaceful, residential feel surrounded by natural green spaces.

St. Johns History

The name “St. Johns” was formally adopted in 2005 after a push to distinguish the area from Jacksonville in postal service listings. Before that, it was commonly grouped with communities like Fruit Cove and Switzerland.

St. Johns County itself dates back to 1821, making it one of Florida’s two original counties. It was named for the St. Johns River, a major waterway that forms the county’s western boundary.
