About Jacksonville Beach
Jacksonville Beach is located on the northern part of San Pablo Island in Duval County. It’s part of the greater Jacksonville Beaches community, which includes Neptune Beach, Atlantic Beach, and Ponte Vedra Beach.
While part of consolidated Duval County, Jacksonville Beach retains its own city government. The city, together with the other communities that make up the Beaches, has 22 miles of beaches popular for surfing, swimming, and suntanning.
Jacksonville Beach History
Originally known as Pablo Beach, the area was first settled in the 19th century by developers seeking to build a resort destination. The Jacksonville and Atlantic Railroad brought early settlers, with William and Eleanor Scull building the first home in 1884.
The name changed to Jacksonville Beach in 1925. The area saw popularity as a resort and amusement destination with places like the Ocean View Pavilion and Little Coney Island. Military presence in the area during the Spanish–American War and early aviation milestones added to its historical significance.
