Fernandina Beach is in Nassau County, in northeast Florida. With a population just over 13,000, it offers a small-town feel with easy access to Jacksonville just 25 miles away. The city sits on Amelia Island, surrounded by marshes, the Amelia River, and the Atlantic Ocean.

Spain formally established Fernandina in 1811, naming it for King Ferdinand VII. It was the last city platted in the Western Hemisphere under Spanish rule.

During the 19th century, Fernandina was a hotbed of conflict. Various flags flew over Amelia Island, including those of France, Britain, Mexico, and the Confederacy. Fort Clinch, just outside the city, played a key role in the Civil War and is now preserved as a state park and historic site.
