About Clay County
Clay County sits along the western edge of the St. Johns River. It’s home to over 230,000 residents and is the third-largest county in the Jacksonville metro. Most people live in suburban communities like Lakeside and Fleming Island.
The county has experienced rapid population growth since 1990. Residents enjoy high household incomes and top-rated public schools. A majority of working residents commute to nearby cities like Jacksonville and St. Augustine.
The area was settled in the early 1800s. Zephaniah Kingsley established a plantation at present-day Orange Park. In 1858, Clay County officially split from Duval County.
Green Cove Springs became a tourism hotspot in the late 1800s. Visitors arrived by steamboat for the mineral springs and warm climate. President Grover Cleveland famously had spring water shipped to the White House.
In the 20th century, the military played a major role in the county’s growth. Camp Blanding trained over 90,000 troops during WWII. Naval Air Station Green Cove Springs also supported war efforts. Today, the county remains a home for many active-duty and retired military families.
